I was thrilled to learn that Royal Rugrats "Royal Utensil Set" was featured in this months SIMPLY HANDMADE Magazine! It is a wonderful magazine for those of us who have a love of crafting. I strive to bring my customers unique heirloom quality items for their royal chefs. This design was inspired by the resident royal chef in my house who simply needed to have utensils to properly "bake" her yummies up! Summer is finally here! It is wonderful to finally feel the sun shining brightly in the sky and being able to dip my feet in the lake. I am being inspired by the weather to complete my line of seafood items and yes the patterns are on the way!

This is a great time to pick up some felt food to keep for little surprises over the summer when you need something special to do. If you are looking for something special I am always happy to hear from you.

I also want to thank all of my supportive customers who have sent well wishes my way after a recent emergency surgery and for your patience when I had to close up shop for two weeks. I am happy to report that we are back up and running as usual.

I am ready to get back on my blog! The holiday season came on so quickly and unfortunately my blog had to be set aside so that I could create for all of the Royal Chefs who needed some yummies under the tree.

I can not thank all of my wonderful customers who have made this one incredible year for the Royal Rugrats felt food line. I am honored to design for you and have loved receiving your emails and comments about your little chefs playing with their new yummies.

I will do my best to catch you up on all of the exciting things that have taken place and of course new and amazing things to come throughout 2011.

Felt Food Designs with Me at Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum

Come and design felt food with me! On Saturday October 23,2010 I will be at the

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum/ Smithsonian in NYC.

Pumpkins & Witches Kitchen Event! You will be able to design your very own pumpkin or gourd for the fall. A super way to spend a day with your Royal Chef and make something that will add to your Halloween and Thanksgiving decor. There will be other great events like mask making and a scavenger hunt for the kids.

These were made by my Royal Chef and she did an amazing job...she may just be taking over for me one day soon:)

99 days until Christmas, Oh My! I guess the count down has begun. I started shopping this past weekend picking up a super cool I Spy game for my rugrat. It may be the best deal of the year, it was on sale for $5.00 at the grand opening and then I had a $3.00 off coupon so $2.57 was a super way to start our holiday shopping off!

I spotted Royal Rugrats on some great blogs and sites and wanted to say a big thanks to the bloggers and ETSY artists!

Growing a Green Family wrote an article titled Amazing Eco-Friendly Felt Food Fun for Kids.

She was so kind to include my fruits and veggies from the Royal Rugrats Summer 2010 Collection. You have to take a look at some of the other felt food designers I am always in awe of what people can do...did you see that cake!? The article also includes very informative links on different kinds of felts so you can learn even more about this craft.

MommieVentures's Blog wrote all about some of my favorite yummies. You can view her fun blog and find giveaways and other great picks for parents there! I always appreciate other Moms who take the time to help small businesses and also provide useful tips and links which you will find here.

I've been super busy creating new summer tiem designs for our Royal Chefs!

My collections of fruits and vegetable will be available over the next week and I'm am so excited for your to see them. Today I listed my Deluxe Vegetable delight Collection of vegetables and ranch dip.

NEW Play Food Apple Dippers

Royal Apple Dippers!

I'm excited to share a new Eco Felt Play Food design just in time for summer time play.

This favorite children's snack is a combination of sweet and tart apple slices with a side of caramel sauce. Each apple slice had wonderful hand stitching and an apple seeds in the middle just like real apples. A container of Caramel sauce for apple dipping completes this set. Caramel sauce is removable from the dipping sauce container for a little extra fun.

This was inspired by my own Royal Chef who wanted a healthy snack to prepare during imagination play time and has been 100% kid approved!

I love that Valentines Day is on Sunday this year. A whole day for family time and enjoying each other. Today we plan on making a big breakfast feast before church and then spending the day playing games and hanging out together.

Seriously I can't believe that I have not had time to post in so long but life has been in overdrive during this holiday shipping season. I was in a bit of shock and excited that my newest addition, Royal Yummies had an amazing start! I can't thank everyone enough for their support and encouragement.

Today I packaged and shipped the last of the orders that will make it in time for the holidays. Not since my college days, and believe me that seems long ago have I pulled the famous "all nighter". I am working on about 10 hours of sleep for the last three days and cant wait to get a full night of sleep in tonight! In two weeks time I have hand crafted 371 pieces of Eco Felt Goodies!!!!

It has been so much fun creating fun pieces that are also earth friendly. I cant wait to see photos of all of my newest Royal Rugrats kids enjoying their new goodies:)

I thought it was appropriate to tell you this week about some of our favorite Halloween stories we have been reading. There is still time to get to your library and check out these fun stories before this weekend.

The Bumpy Little Pumpkin by Margery Cuyler and illustrated by Will Hillenbrand. MY little girl loved this story and we have read it several times. About a girl who finds a lumpy little pumpkin that she thinks is perfect for her jack-o-lantern. Although no one else thinks so she is able to transform it into a beautiful jack-o-lantern with the help of her forest friends!

The Spider and the Fly by Tony DiTerlizzi is not exactly a Halloween story but since it is done entirely in black and white with ghosts it certainly is an interesting tale. It is a great segway into talking about not trusting strangers and is a bit creepy. I enjoyed this one myself!

What is Halloween without the classic tale of The Legend of Sleepy Hallow, we decided to read the tale from the Walt Disney American Classics series. This one has lots of big illustrations and simplifies the story for younger readers. We live very close to Sleepy Hallow and that made it all the more fun to read this classic story and talk about the town.

Halloween

The times for ghouls and goblin's is finally here. We love Halloween at our house and have been enjoying the festivities. It's always fun decorating the house both inside and out! On Saturday we had my nephew over and we carved our pumpkins. This was the first year that the kids could really help with it and they had a great time...although they absolutely did not want to touch that "icky" stuff inside! This is the week of several Halloween parties with our girl so I will share some fun photos from our first one .

I thought today I would share a fun find for kids.

We recently picked up the board game Learning about Manners Picnic Basket Game. I was not sure how much my own little girl would enjoy it but she is loving it! We have played it so many times and its refreshing to play a game that really is a great tool for helping our little ones with proper manners. I think we could all use a little reminder about manners every once in awhile:)

It comes with a great book about the kids of Noodleboro that is all about the importance of Please and Thank You. I found this on sale at Toys-R-Us for only $4.95 if your looking to stock up for the holidays.

A fun story about a dancing duck. The illustrations are so sweet and perfect for little girls who love to dance. Its a great book to have children recognize different animals and the movements they make. A fun way for little ones to dance around and pretend that they are one of the animals in the play. For older children learning to read it is sure to introduce them to new words.

I enjoyed this and was happy to learn that there are other Kathy Duck dance adventures to check out at our next trip to the library.

My little girl started kindergarten two weeks ago and I felt like the kid. She was so excited and I was a nervous mess! We have gotten into our routine and although it makes me sad that my baby is growing up I am so proud of her.

This photo just cracks me up, it really shows how excited she is.

On the home front things have been great. Remember my new studio? Well it is almost complete and I LOVE it! Its great to have so much room to spread out and have fun making my designs. I am waiting on some new shelving but that will be here soon. I am thrilled to finally be completing this project and could not have done it without my wonderful... and handy husband.

It's been a crazy month as you can see I have not posted in a long time. I'm sorry for my absence but things have started rolling here for Royal Rugrats as well as for our family.

After many months of hard work Royal Rugrats is now available for wholesale. I am really excited about my new venture. I have a wonderful sales consultant who is overseeing Royal Rugrats for the NYC area. I want to keep the brand small so that I can still lovingly oversee every detail that goes into my pieces so quantities are limited.

Our Fall transition line went very well and I am honored to have so many wonderful customers who support Royal Rugrats. There are some new goodies up my sleeve. Later this week we will debut a whole new line of handbags and totes just for Moms! The line is appropriately called "Family" and it will be available in very limited quantities so make sure to be the first ones to know when it is available. "Madeline"

Our family has been busy enjoying some together time throughout August. We have played at the beach and spent a lot of time in the lake. We just finished a major renovation to our kitchen and I will share some peeks soon! Since my kitchen was from the time of dinosaurs it is wonderful to have a kitchen that is enjoyable to be in.

The most exciting renovation we have undertaken has been a bigger studio for Royal Rugrats (if you could see me you would know I am jumping up and down!)because I have outgrown mine. We also added a new play room for my girl. It will be so nice to have a place for her to play and not have to worry about the mess. I am on a constant hunt for good organizers so let me know if you have some great ideas.

We are about half way through this project and I am bubbling over with excitement. Ill be sure to show you when we are through!

I will get better with my little blog once school starts next week. Until then I am going to eat up every moment I can spending with my wonderful husband and daughter.

It delivers a story about where your dreams can take you. The story is about two friends who go to The Dream Shop and are able to pick out what they want their dreams to be about.

Its also a great book to discuss the good and bad dreams that our kids have and help them to understand.

We call it Dream Land in our house and try to make going to bed fun racing to see who can make it there first.

This week we found a book that was so much fun to read!

The Pout Pout Fish written by Deborah Diesen Illustrated by Dan Hanna

Fun pictures and the story line is great. This is a book where you absolutely must make up voices for the characters as you read along...really you just can't help it!

Mr. Pout Pout thinks he must always be glum and bring the dreary wearies to everyone. What a nice surprise in the end to find out he turns into a Kiss Kiss fish... smooches for all. Gotta love it.

So cute and well worth a quick trip to your local library to check out for a bedtime story.

Its hard to believe that it has been four years since I first heard the words craniosynostosis.

It was a life altering moment.

Then....

Now....

Children with craniosynostosis have congenital deformities of the head, including craniosynostosis, hypertelorism, Apert's syndrome, Crouzon's syndrome, and Pfeiffer's syndrome. The majority are developmentally normal and even those that may be a bit delayed, have the potential to lead normal lives if the deformity is treated in its early stages.Many of the children have multiple cranial sutures that are permanently fused- preventing the brain from developing properly. These young patients first undergo a sophisticated three-dimensional CT scan. A template - or roadmap - is then made for the complex operation. Surgery involves releasing these sutures and reconstructing the skull into a normal appearance.The traditional craniofacial procedures to treat craniosynostosis require large exposures and extensive dissection of the soft tissues.
Craniosynostosis has been reported to occur approximately once per 1,900 live births, but the true incidence is probably higher.

I was terrified when the news came that Jaiden was indeed a cranio kid. What did this mean, what were our options and how could I protect my little girl while helping her at the same time?

There were two things that made a huge difference in our lives. I found a website called http://www.cappskids.org/ where parents can go, chat, share their fears and successes with one another. It gave me comfort to have people who were "holding my hand" through this process.

Then we were given an angel and her name is Tina Tierno. Tina's beautiful son Louis was also a cranio kid and she was there for me at any hour on any day. She never made me feel like a question was to small or that she was to busy to talk. Believe me I called quite a bit sometimes with new questions and sometimes just to ease my own fears. There are not many people in this world who are so selfless and Tina will always have a special place in our hearts for the love she showed us.

In June of 2005 Jaidens surgery was scheduled. We worked with the infamous team of Dr. Staffenberg and Dr. Goodrich at Montifiore hospital. I knew that there were no better hands for my daughter to be in. That's not to say I was not terrified. The night before Jaiden went in I wanted to cancel the entire thing. How could I let them cut open my baby and do all of the things necessary to correct her condition? That was the night my husband had to be the strong one while I let myself deal with the fear.

The big day arrived and what a long day it was. We started out getting Jaiden ready for surgery and then I was allowed to go with her to the operating room while they put her under. Once the anaesthesiologist did their job I had to leave the room and literally collapsed onto my husband. We both cried and then we knew it was time to be strong. If she could get through this then we most certainly could be strong for her. After six hours my baby was wheeled out from recovery and into her room. The doctors said that there had been pressure on her brain so we knew our decision had been correct to go ahead with the procedures. She went through with only minor complications and besides the life long battle scar from ear to ear .

Children are a blessing and a miracle. The morning following the operation her eyes were swollen shut but she was smiling. In that moment of her very first smile I knew I was looking at the strongest women I would ever meet in this lifetime. She became my inspiration and it is a moment that I will forever hold dear to my heart.

The road through cranio was long, difficult. It also opened up a world of wonderful people, doctors and new friends. Our families were a constant source of support and without them we would not have made it though.Jaiden is now four years old, starting kindergarten a year early and is the most precious thing in the world to her Daddy and I.

Today is a time to reflect and I will pray for the families whose own little angels are dealing with the trials of cranio.

Graduation

What an exciting week we had!

My little girl graduated from pre-K and is off to kindergarten next year.

Its been an exciting year full of changes and getting use to the idea that our little girl was ready to take the next step. She won an award for being creative, they presented all of the children with one of the 66 points of living each day with God that most represented the child.
They were also given diplomas and it was so sweet at how serious these little ones were and how proud they were of their accomplishments.

Congrats baby girl we are so proud of you!

Bob Books The books are a joint effort by husband and wife team Bobby Lynn Maslen and award winning illustrator John Maslen.

My friend Lynn told me about these wonderful readers. My little one wanted to read on her own and the problem I kept facing was the readers I was finding were about TV cartoons and many did not concentrate on the proper formation of words and sentences. These books have been a dream we are now on level five and still enjoying them every step of the way.

What a glorious week here in NY the flowers are in full bloom. Today I was able to go to my rose garden and start making arrangements. They are both beautiful and delicate. I know that summer has just begun and I am enjoying every moment of it with my family and friends but I am so excited that the fabrics for my Fall Collection are starting to arrive! It's like a surprise present every day opening boxes and seeing the gorgeous colors and patterns. I hope that by next week I am able to start cutting. The sketches are done and now it is time to have some design fun. I'll make sure to have to some sneak peeks for our Royal Rugrats fans:)

We Love to Read Wednesday!

This week we found two books that were a lot of fun to read and educational too!
Martian Rock by Carol Diggory Shields, illustrated by Scott Nash.
This is a great read! Not only a fun story about exploring aliens it is a great way to study the universe and our planets through reading. This is a must:)

The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd. This sweet tale is about a little bunny who wants to go out on its own and the mommy bunny makes sure it knows that wherever it goes she will always follow. Its a touching story that both Mom and little one can enjoy!

This week our favorite read for my daughter and I was Brave Matha written and illustrated by Margot Apple. Its a cute story about a little girl trying to go to bed in the dark.

A classic tale with The Princess and the Pea by John Cech and illustrated by Bernhard Oberdieck.

I want to wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day. Our plans are to pay tribute to our fallen hero's at a memorial service near our home. Everyone at Royal Rugrats wishes you a happy and healthy holiday weekend.

For the Love of Books Wednesday

My all time favorite pastime is reading. I have always had a book in my hands and my own little one had her first library card when she turned one. One of my favorite places is the public library. To me its a magical place where a story can take you anywhere.And who does not like a pastime that is FREE!
I thought it would be fun to start sharing some of our favorites here for the Love of Books Wednesdays.
These are all about the kids!

Pinkalicious By Victoria Kann & Elizabeth Kann is one that my little one cant get enough of. Perfect for little girls. It is about a little girl who LOVES pink and cant get enough of it. But sometimes to much of a good thing is just that:)

A favorite of our entire family is It's Your Cloud by Joe Troiano, illustrated by Martha Aviles. This book is a true pleasure with it beautiful illustrations and fantastic details about looking up at the clouds and all of the wonderful things you may see.

The third and last book for this Wednesdays Books We Love is chosen by my daughter the classic story Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow. Who does not know this tale? Its an easy to read fun story of the little monkeys escapades. Personally I laugh at the ending every time after all the little monkeys have fallen off to sleep and look who is jumping on her bed...Mama!

The sunshine was here for a beautiful weekend in NY!
I love this time of year when you know your toes will soon be in the sand and the frolicking on the beach is something we do everyday.
It has been a great few months of getting Royal Rugrats off the ground as well as juggling family and events. As always I am working on new designs and trying to go through fabric lines until something inspires me!
My little peanut is almost done with her first year of school and although she has loved it I know she cant wait for summer camp to begin....I think that the ice cream truck coming to her camp everyday sounds just like heaven to her ears!
I hope everyone has a little sunshine in their lives today:)

What a busy few weeks it has been!

We had a blast at my grandparents 50th anniversary party. IT was a 50's theme and everyone was decked all out for the special day. I can only hope that my wonderful hubby and I are lucky enough to celebrate our 50th together and have so much fun doing it!

Since we are blogging on our grandparents today we also had the opportunity to work with one of my little girls grandmothers on her secret family recipe for cream puffs.

All I have to say is YUM YUM good!

I have been busy keeping up with orders and working on a few last designs for summer. I am working on some super comfy swim suits that I hope to have available in a few short weeks. Just in time to hit the beaches!

Lets all do our part. My family tries and contribute in a positive way to our earth everyday of the year by recycling, using energy efficient appliances and reusing anything that can be BUT we can do better and today I will try and find ways to do just that.
